Amelia Johannes’ research-based art practice visually explores the construction of identity. Her experimental video artworks visually and spatially explore ritual, tradition, uncertainty, perception and memory as components of identity. The method behind her investigations is to re-assemble collected materials in idiosyncratic ways, whereby raw video footage is edited to emphasis patterns of rhythm, transforming the original material into a visually abstract form. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Amelia Johannes currently lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. Johannes recently completed Master of Fine Art (By Research) at VCA–University of Melbourne. Recent solo exhibitions include I/WE ONE/OTHER, Firstdraft Gallery (Sydney), ONE BOTH AND NEITHER AT ONCE, Propaganda Window (Melbourne) and Twofoldness at Linden Centre for Contemporary Arts (St.Kilda). Her video work has been screened as part of Nite Art Festival, Federation Square (Melbourne), Filmideo, Index Art Centre (NJ) and Australian Experimental Film Festival.
