Joel Stern is a Melbourne-based curator, researcher and artist. Interests include conceptual approaches to sound – ‘what isn’t music?’, contemporary moving-image art and avant-garde film, and the Australian experimental ‘tradition’. Joel’s key artistic projects include the self-made instrument ensemble Sky Needle, ongoing collaborations with filmmakers Pia Borg and Sally Golding, and solo performances using light-sensitive electronic material. Joel co-directs the collectives OtherFilm, Instrument Builders Project and Disembraining Machine amongst a range of ongoing curatorial activities encompassing both large-scale institutional and DIY projects. In 2014 / 2015 Joel is the national curator for Liquid Architecture festival.
