‘I remember the sound of a test pattern always came as an unpleasant shock when switching channels. As nothing was on, it was a fair signal I should do something other than watch TV. Test Pattern is a non-narrative video exploring a near obsolete technology through colour and sound. Historically test patterns were shown at the end and beginning of programming for the day and also to calibrate the camera. I see some irony in the decision to put an end to a mode of transmission that allows for nothing to be on, for a rest, as we transition to never-ending apparent ‘content’.
